The best day of my life.

Hi everyone! Soooo I’m so excited to share some news! This weekend was the best weekend, probably ever. I’m excited to announce that I’m engaged to the love of my life and I’m still on cloud 9 as I write this post on our flight back surrounded by clouds! ;) I wanted to share my story with y’all because Trey deserves all the credit. Also because I love reading proposal stories on blogs and used to stay up late at night crying, watching YouTube videos of stranger’s engagements. There’s just something about love that makes you so happy when other people are happy. I’m that girl that watches “say yes to the dress” with the girls on the reg and has had a special folder on her laptop (Pre-Pinterest days) with a secret name that contains saved images of wedding ideas and inspiration. I LOVE love, and it’s such an indescribable feeling to know that someone chose you to be their one. I can’t wait to be Trey’s wife. So for those who are interested in reading all about our story/proposal without further adieu, here it is!

Our Story:
Every year in December my friends and I go to New Orleans for one of my best friend’s Steph’s birthday. So December 16, 2011, Allison, Steph, Karissa, and I were road tripping to NOLA from Houston. We were meeting a couple other girls there that had gotten on the road a little earlier. We came up with the idea of playing a game on Bourbon where we each of us has to fulfill a dare that the rest of the girls pick, and if it’s not fulfilled then you couldn’t sleep in our room. (Which of course we all knew wouldn’t happen, but it was fun to think we would really have nowhere to sleep, so we would actually feel no choice but to fulfill the dare) As soon as we got into town we headed to Bourbon Street to celebrate Steph’s birthday. We met Trey and his friends soon after. They were in New Orleans celebrating one the guys graduation. We were all pretty drawn to the fact that they played college football and we all loved their accents! In Texas, football is everything and a lot of girls (me) like southern boys- accents included. I remembered our game that we had talked about and got together with the girls and picked a random guy (Trey) to have his face licked by our friend Sarah. We of course confirmed with his friends that he was single, and Sarah agreed to the dare. She was talking to him and randomly did it. He was taken off guard, but had a very cool attitude about it and laughed it off. He actually even let her do it again, so we could get a picture. I really liked his sense of humor and was happy he didn’t react differently. Trey and I talked a little and when we were leaving he asked me for my number- but I didn’t give it to him. I brushed it off and said “we’ll be on bourbon, if you find me and we run into each other again, I will give it to you.” Sure enough, he found me an hour later and we sat and talked for a while. By the end of the night he had gotten my number. I remember, one thing that stood out to me that night was his friend Katie coming up to me saying “he’s a really good guy”, and that stuck with me forever. The next few days we texted and talked here and there but I thought the idea of being a relationship was crazy since he lived in Mississippi (later moved back to his hometown in Alabama), and I was in Texas. Our relationship evolved and I came to find out that Katie was right. I had never met a sweeter guy, chivalrous, gentleman, respectful, with a great personality and great eyelashes! :) We did the long distance thing for 18 months. Flying back and forth from Alabama to Texas every month. After those 18 months were over, in June 2013- one month after I had graduated with my MA in Counseling, Trey moved to Texas. To say the LDR was hard would be an understatement, but I’m just so glad we took a leap of faith and never gave up because now we are engaged and happier than ever. Every single obstacle of our relationship was worth it. This moment right here is the most rewarding of them all.

The Proposal:
So almost 2.5 years later, Trey proposed at Oak Alley Plantation in Louisiana. We were in Baton Rouge for a wedding on Friday 20140617-172350-62630225.jpg and planned to stay in New Orleans Saturday so we could spend time with my High School friend Cassie and her husband who recently moved there. I was completely caught off guard with everything that was going on and had no idea what we were doing at the Plantation. He said he knew I loved Plantations and wanted to go on a tour. It was about 10 am and we started walking around the grounds. This place was absolutely beautiful.

20140617-112828-41308676.jpg Trey’s hands were really sweaty and I kept bringing that up. He just said that it was really humid, when really it wasn’t at all-but I just went with it. We toured the grounds and we were walking towards the front of the house. I kept asking him to take a picture with me and he was saying, no we’ll do it later.. Which to me was really weird because Trey doesn’t mind taking pictures and is actually really patient with me when I’m not content with the first 15 we take lol and is okay with taking more, as long as I’m happy with one. But once again, I just went with it. I just figured his stomach was hurting because he had no appetite during breakfast and had been in the restroom for about 15 mins while I waited at the gift shop. So anyway, we got to the front of the house

20140617-115804-43084310.jpgand we started walking down the path and all of a sudden Trey stopped and I saw a photographer and heard our song being sung by a girl playing a guitar, and Trey just started proposing. I immediately started shaking and crying and kept saying “what are you doing, oh my god, Trey what are you doing” I was bawling and shaking and seriously couldn’t stop. I didn’t say yes and didn’t look at my ring I just hugged him and we cried together and it was the best moment of my life.

20140617-120146-43306080.jpgThe photographer even asked, “so was that a yes?” It was such a surreal moment, that I will never forget. Trey hired a guitarist and a photographer to capture every second of the proposal. I had noticed them both earlier but he was pretending to take pictures of the plantation and the landscape, and then later were working together trying to not blow the cover. He started taking pictures of her sitting with her guitar, and I was thinking “oh, grad pictures! How pretty.” So the whole time I thought Trey was in the restroom, he was really texting them and just letting them know we were there and what we were wearing since they had never met us before. That also explained why his palms were sweaty and he didn’t want to eat, nerves! I’m almost positive I was a detective in my 1st life, so I have no idea how I didn’t think once about the possibility of a proposal.

After taking a few more pictures at the plantation and the whole staff clapping and congratulating us (Trey had been in contact with them via email) we were on our way to New Orleans. I called my mom, my dad (which Trey had already asked permission from), my sisters, texted my boss, and all my best friends. Everyone was so excited and so happy for us, especially my baby nephew. 20140617-143449-52489562.jpg
Not paying attention to where we were going, I looked up and saw a limo waiting for us. I loved this part so Trey wouldn’t have to be driving and we could enjoy the moment together. He had champagne waiting for us, perfect for the ride to New Orleans. 20140617-125737-46657240.jpg

I remember telling him how I wished my family and the girls were there to celebrate with us. But it felt good because I have a group chat with my family and others with my friends so I felt like they were there with us. We kept sending pictures and everyone was so happy for us. So we arrived to New Orleans and Trey said we were going to meet my friend and Cassie and her husband for lunch to celebrate, so we got out of the car and started walking towards the restaurant. Then, all of a sudden- my girls, my best friends, the ones who were there when I met him, the ones who truly care about me and my relationship with him, the ones who helped me through the LDR and knew how hard it was for me, and encouraged me not to give up- all popped out of the corner and I just lost it.
(Luckily they paid someone $5 to record us all bawling)

This video makes me cry every single time. I just couldn’t believe that Trey made that happen, for me, because he knew it would make me so happy to have them there. So all 7 of us cried, pretty much for the rest of the day. I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have friends, that would drop whatever is going on, and book flights or drive to New Orleans for me, with a two weeks notice. Like how did I get so lucky to end up with such a close group of best friends? Love each of them so much for being there. Thank you Ronay, Mal Mal, Stephy, Al (miss Texas 1999), little K, and Al Pal (Polly Pocket) for being there. Love you girls so much.

20140617-132814-48494611.jpg Thank you Cassie for being such a good host to your new city and most importantly, thank you Trey for being the best fiancé in the world. Here are some more pictures of our trip in Nola:

I was so excited to get home and celebrate with my family! My mom and sister surprised me with this as soon as I walked in the door:
